bio
I began my creative career as a child, learning how to sew, crochet and knit from my mother. My happiest achievement at the age of 13 was sewing a "grasshopper" jumper with really long armholes. Learning contour drawing at that same time was a revelation to me. I felt as if someone had opened a huge door on a warehouse full of treasures.
I feel the same way about writing and drama, having written stories, plays and poetry since elementary school. In high school, I was editor for and a contributor to the school literary magazine. I was also an actress, stage manager, student director and thespian. I took every art class I could fit in before graduation, designing my own curriculum under the guidance of the head of the art department. I decided to study fine art in college. A tough decision, wishing I could have three lives to study writing, fine art and drama.
During the college summers, I hung out in the basement playing text adventures and teaching myself Basic on my father's TRS-80. In 1974 I completed a B.A. in Art & Design with a Secondary Teaching Certificate, thinking I would teach, but instead raising 3 children. As they grew, I sewed their clothes, took photographs, journaled and sketched in my spare time. I also did community service in the arts and other areas. My most interesting experiences from this time are participating in an elementary school vocational fair by demonstrating my artistic technique, being a guest lecturer in the same school on the creative process and teaching teenagers, pre-schoolers and adults.
I began my return to full-time creative endeavors in 1984, selling my works at the open air Ghent Arts Festival in Norfolk, VA. In 1988 I picked up a B. A in Psychology from Virginia Commonwealth University. In 1991 I began trading my creativity for cash in the Management Training department of Public Service Electric and Gas in New Jersey, developing visual concepts and layouts for their customized training programs. Studying commercial art for a year at Virginia Commonwealth University in 1992 honed my skills in layout and typography. I have had adventures in pre-press, as a freelancing artist and designer, and as senior graphic designer for a large corporation. At the moment I'm employed as Creative Services Manager for HRH. In my spare time, I continue my creative endeavorssome of which you can see in this site.
